Leadership Washington Focus - Contact the 4-H Office for more information and applications

The 4th Annual Leadership Washington Focus (LWF) will be held July 17-21, 2017 at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase Maryland. There will be 4-H members representing several states across the nation at Leadership Washington Focus. LWF is a 4-day event (Monday-Friday) for 4-H members in grades 6-8 at the time of application. The program will provide an opportunity for youth to listen to motivational speakers and participate in workshops that will develop communication skills, increase leadership capacity and build lifetime skills. The program utilizes Washington, D.C. as a working classroom to learn about leadership and provides hands-on opportunities for our younger teens to promote “Learn to Lead Now - Better Leaders Tomorrow."

Activities during the 4-day conference will help delegates to:
·Build confidence in their ability to motivate and direct others in meaningful action.
·Practice effective communication with others through group discussion and public speaking.
·Work with others to create and accomplish goals.
·Develop an understanding of leadership styles and identify personal style.
·Exchange ideas, practice respect and form friendships with other 4-H'ers from across the nation.
·Visit some of D.C.'s most spectacular sights and learn about the different types of leadership conveyed through the symbolism of our national monuments and memorials.

2017 National 4-H Conference scheduled for March 25-30, 2017 at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center.

National 4-H Conference is hosted by NIFA/USDA. The purpose of the conference is to bring together youth and adults to help with strategic planning for the 4- H program nationally. The event is attended by approximately 300 young people from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada. Participants work in committees to identify issues and ideas that become part of a strategic plan for 4-H.

State delegates also develop a state plan and are expected to implement the plan during the upcoming 4-H year. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to visit Congressional Representatives during the event.

New Jersey sends six (6) 4-H members to National 4-H Conference. All interested 4-H members must complete an application form and participate in a group and individual interview at the state level. Potential delegates must be in the 10-12 grades as of September 2016 and between 15 and 19 years old (as of January 1, 2017).
